Dear KUA Families,
This has been a busy few weeks! KUA staff has been working diligently to solidify plans for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. We have listened to the feedback from our families, staff and community to develop a plan that we feel will best support our students and families. While we know that anything can change with COVID 19, we have developed a plan based on our current regulations, safety requirements, and student needs. This plan includes best practices for safety, socio-emotional support and the desire to continue our rigorous, high quality instruction for every student.
Our plan follows the current Oregon Department of Education guidelines for reopening schools safely. Based on this guidance, we have analyzed space requirements for each classroom and area that will be used for instruction next year. We know that students learn best when they are on campus with a teacher, and the majority of parents have shared that they want students at KUA 5 days a week. This plan will allow ALL students in K-8th to be on campus 5 days a week! It does mean being creative with space and using the upper gym, cafeteria, art, music, and science classrooms for our middle school students.
Middle school teachers will rotate to students and students will stay in the same classroom most of the day. At elementary, students will be divided into 2 rooms and the teacher will rotate during the day with a highly qualified Instructional Assistant so each student gets live instruction during the day. We will also be utilizing a high tech method of live-streaming classroom instruction to students who are at home and unable to come to school for health reasons. At Kindergarten we are hiring a 3rd teacher to lower the class sizes and provide greater support for our youngest learners.
KUA is a school of choice and we know that parents want to have different educational plans for next year. We will have 3 options that families can choose from:
KUA 5 day Traditional Instruction – Students will attend school 5 days a week and be in a set “cohort” with other students. Transitions during the day will be limited. We will also be training students in using Google Classroom and See Saw for our younger grades in case we have to transition to distance learning.

KUA Hybrid – Students would be on campus 2 or 3 days a week. While at home they will watch live instruction via Zoom.

KUA VIBE Distance Learning 2.0 – Students will be at home and will watch live instruction via Zoom. They will have a structured schedule that includes a full day of learning. Staff will check in with students and lead live small group lessons a few days a week. Grading will be different than in the Spring and students will receive normal grades like they do while on campus. Learning will be a combination of live instruction, small groups on Zoom, and independent work on computer programs.
We need to know which option you will be choosing for your child this year. Please complete the Google survey to let us know your plans. If we don’t hear back from you, we will reach out to you!
Link to survey:
Additional updates about next year:
School Calendar – Our new calendar will follow MSD’s change to a trimester system. Our first day of school will be Monday, August 31st. The first week will be a “soft start” which means only half the students will come each day. This will help staff train students in the new protocols and also ease students back into being at school.
Transportation – We are dependent upon MSD’s transportation services. It is possible that routes and transportation times may change next year based on new requirements. Once we hear from Medford about transportation, we will let you know.

Daily Schedule – Our daily schedule may change based on transportation needs. However, we do not currently have plans to change our start and end times.

Afterschool Programs – We plan to offer our regular after school enrichment program. Students will be grouped in grade level cohorts to minimize sharing germs with other students.

Safety Plan – KUA is working on a plan that we will submit to ODE that specifically outlines our safety protocols for next year. This will be shared with parents once it is completed.

Computers- Each student will be assigned a school computer to take home daily. We will also provide a charger that can be left at home. In the event there is a student or staff member who has COVID, we may have to transition to KUA VIBE Distance Learning 2.0 for a period of time. We don’t want a loss in instructional time because students don’t have computers at home. If you are buying a backpack for your child, please choose one that has a computer pouch inside. We will also have computer backpacks available.

School Supplies- The school supply list will be posted online. Students will need a set of supplies for the classroom and some basic supplies for home in case we transition to distance learning. We cannot share supplies anymore. If you need assistance with school supplies, let us know.

Uniforms – We will be using uniforms this year. Students learning at home will also wear uniforms.

Parents, Visitors & Volunteers in the building – We will have to limit who is allowed in the building next year. It is very likely that only students and staff will be allowed on campus.

Cell Phones – We want students to focus on learning and not be distracted with their phones. Due to this, students will not be allowed to have cell phones at school. If they bring one to campus it will be turned in to the office and given back at the end of the day.

Synergy- We will have a new student management system next year that will allow parents to see their child’s grades immediately! It will also improve communication with parents.

PreKids Unlimited preschool – We plan to have our PreK program open this year for children ages 4 & 5 years! We will share registration information with families soon!
We would like to share these updates with you in a virtual parent meeting on Tuesday July 21st via Zoom and Facebook Live. We will host a session in English from 6:00-6:45 and one in Spanish from 6:45-7:30. Zoom links will be shared via Remind. This is an opportunity to hear more about KUA’s plans for next year and to ask any questions you might have. You will be receiving a survey to let us know which option you are choosing for your child. This information is necessary for planning purposes.
Thank you for your continued support as we work through this together!

Dear KUA Families,

It is my privilege and honor to be the new Principal/Academic Director for Kids Unlimited Academy! Working at KUA over the last 3 years has given me the opportunity to get to know you and your families. In my 20 year career in education I have worked in many different schools, and I know that KUA is a unique place to learn! Our students bring their enthusiasm for learning each day and each have unique abilities and talents. I know that change can be difficult for everyone, but I appreciate your trust as we start this journey together! Although we will all miss Mrs. Hale in her retirement, we will still see her at KUA sometimes!

I am writing to let you know that today we have received from the Oregon Department of Education outlining how to open our schools in the fall in the safest manner possible. KUA will follow this guidance to keep students safe and at the same time, keep them on campus learning!

A few important highlights of the guidance:
Face coverings are required for some of our staff who come into close contact with students, and recommended for all staff.
Face coverings are not required for students younger than 6th grade. Face coverings are recommended for students in 6th – 12th grade, but not required.
Physical distancing of up to 6 ft or 35 square feet per student in a space is required. (We will need to calculate what this means for our class sizes and the number of students we can have in a building at one time.)
We will need to stagger where students enter and exit the building and keep track of who’s coming in and out.
Playgrounds will be open to students during the school day (limited groups at a time) and sanitized between use.
We will need to keep student groups together (such as classes/cohorts) to the extent possible.
We will need to work with our health department in the event of a case or an outbreak.

Thank you to everyone who was able to take our survey about the KUA VIBE Distance Learning program. Parents shared that they appreciated the supports we offered, but the majority of parents would like students to be on campus next year. We are currently working on plans that would support that request and at the same time provide other Distance Learning options for students with health conditions that may prevent them from being on campus. Our goal is to support every family with an educational plan tailored to your child’s individual learning needs.

We would like to share these updates with you in a virtual parent meeting on Wednesday, July 1st at 6:30 via Zoom and Facebook Live. Zoom links will be shared via Remind. This is an opportunity to hear more about KUA’s plans for next year and to ask any questions you might have.

Thank you for our continued patience and grace as we work through this together with our students’ best interest in our hearts.

In appreciation,

Sunshine Price

Sunshine Price

A message from Mrs.Hale:

Greetings,

To all of my friends, families and friends of Kids Unlimited Academy, as of this June, I am closing out my four year service to KUA as principal. I wrote letters to each grade level and I wanted to share with you the letter I wrote to KUA’s 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

Dear KUA Middle School Students,

In June 2016, I retired from a 32 year career in education, serving the children of the Medford School District and the Phoenix-Talent School District. Then, 5 months later, I received a call from Tom Cole. He convinced me to pay KUA a visit. The day I visited KUA, I met Tom Cole, several board members, teachers and staff members. I was surrounded, on that first day, with kind, fun and smart people whose mission was and had always been my own: to ensure all children had an educational experience that built confidence and hope. For decades, Tom and I had been working in the same community, towards the same goals. Tom convinced me to leave retirement and lead KUA. I said, yes. After 32 years working as a local teacher, coach and administrator, fighting against discrimination and inequity, I had found a person and a place whose mission matched my own and I had met a leader who, as time has shown, would inspire me daily.

Five years later, my time at KUA has come to a close. I make this announcement knowing that despite our current challenges, KUA is and will always be #KUASTRONG. Sunshine Price, my Assistant Principal and friend, will become KUA’s principal. She will be surrounded and supported by the same core staff, a staff united by a shared mission: to break down barriers for children and to provide our children a “Beacon of Hope”.

When I began at KUA, I had an elderly mother to care for as well as a new grandbaby. Recently, on April 15th , my mother passed away and with my grandchildren growing quickly, now is the time to step away from the principalship. In talking to Tom, we agreed that one simply can’t “retire” from KUA. I plan on responding to needs when they arise, whether this be through fundraising, helping teachers in the classroom or our children on the playground. I hope I get invited to your dances and assemblies, games and performances! You need an old lady talk? I’m there!

I will never ever forget the students who helped and inspired me, made me laugh daily and also made my gray hairs triple. You know who you are!!!

My biggest prayer is that you never ever give up on yourself. Zero people, including my parents, my family or my friends would have predicted I would become a teacher or a principal. NEVER. This is because no one could have predicted the challenges I faced or the decisions I made. Look closely at anyone and I mean ANYONE – who questions or criticizes your goals or dreams. These people lack imagination. NEVER ever be afraid of hard work and NEVER expect other people to do your work for you. I wasn’t a reader. I never finished high school. But then – I realized that I had nothing to lose if I tried. I took typing classes. I tried small jobs. I was a cafeteria monitor. I credit everything in my life to my willingness to walk away from negative people and seek out those people who inspired me. I want you to do the same. Do the work. Ask for help. Every day, forgive yourself for your mistakes and start over again. Trust me please.

I’m an old lady and I know things.

Big big hugs to all!
Mrs. Hale

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support through these amazing years. I will always be a phone call away in supporting the work KUA does to break down boundaries and change lives for the better.

– – – – – – – – –

No me fascinaba leer.

KU is Offering Dinner

Due to the continuing needs in our community, Kids Unlimited is offering Dinner along with Breakfast and Lunch for children in our community ages 18 and younger.  We are changing our hours to 9:30AM – 1:30PM for pickup of all three meals at once.  If you normally have meals delivered to your home, you will not get dinner delivered.  This is due to keeping meals hot and ready to eat!

We would like to give another huge shout out to our AWESOME kitchen staff who are adding a ton of work to their already busy day. We continue to provide an average of 1400 meals a day!!!

Amazing Opportunity for Food Assistance for all Kids Unlimited Academy & PreKids Unlimited Preschool families

Dear KUA/PreKids Unlimited Families,

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020, has provided additional funding to families whose children were receiving free or reduced price meals when school was in session.

The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) will provide additional funding on a per student basis for families to spend on qualifying food purchases in their community. P-EBT funds go directly to eligible children to bring food into their household. This program helps alleviate food insecurity and increase local spending at the same time.

Existing Oregon Trail Card beneficiaries will have additional funds added to their cards. Families who do not have a card already will receive one in the mail with a letter explaining the program sometime in June.

Households whose children received free meals when school closed on March 16, 2020 will receive the following for each child, a total of $384:

March, $69
April, $126
May, $120
June, $69

Are you qualified or how do you qualify?

Kids Unlimited Academy & PreKids Unlimited Preschool students all participate in the National School Lunch Program.  Due to this, your household will automatically receive this benefit. You do not need to apply for anything or do anything further to receive this benefit.  We are submitting all information to the Oregon Dept of Education, they will then share that with DHS, who is issuing the Oregon Trail Cards to qualifying families.  However, this is an opt-in program if you choose not to use it simply destroy the card.

PEBT benefits are not considered in a public charge test and are not considered SNAP. This benefit will not count against your immigration status.

If you have any questions about this benefit, please contact the office at 541-774-3900.

Thank you!
KUA Staff

Yes, Kris and his crew will continue providing meals just as we have done these past few months. We are also going to add a “dinner” option.
  • Will Kids Unlimited be offering a summer program?
We don’t know at this time, but will keep you updated as the state gives us guidance.
  • Will Kids Unlimited be offering a summer program for migrant families?
We will have a virtual Migrant Summer School if we are unable to be on campus.
  • Will the Kids Unlimited Office still be open during the summer?
Yes, Michele Hull & Jose Jimenez, can be reached using the following number: (541) 774-3900 or by email: mhull@kuacademycharter.org & jjimenez@kuacademycharter.org .  Check our www.kuaoregon.org website or our Kids Unlimited Academy FB page to see updates from KUA.

  • What will next school year look like? Will we be at KUA or online?
At this time we do not know what the fall will look like for students.  We are preparing for multiple possibilities – being on campus with social distancing and other safety measures implemented, having alternating schedules where students attend school different days of the week, and distance learning online.  Regardless of which scenario we are facing, we are prepared to provide a high quality education for your children and are committed to meeting their needs!

Thank you for your continued support and trust in Kids Unlimited Academy and our staff.  We feel honored to work with your children each day!

Sincerely,

Jani Hale

#KUASTRONG Closure Update
April 15th, 2020

Dear KUA Families,

When Governor Brown announced schools would be closed until the end of the year and that all Oregon schools would transition from Supplemental Learning to Distance Learning, we took a collective deep breath.  We knew that Supplemental Learning was all about choices and options and that Distance Learning was about guidelines for success with our students from a distance.

Together we carefully reviewed all of the state recommended guidelines and would like to present to you the following participation and grading guidelines for our KUA students:

Participation:

KUA will follow MSD guidelines for participation.  We understand these are trying times for parents and everyone is experiencing different levels of need.  To ensure that NO student is penalized during this time period we want to be very clear that KUA is looking at participation from students as a basis for attendance and grading.

  • Participation will be documented with each student at least 2 times per week. We encourage families to participate as much as they can!  Any of the following count as participation:
    • Google Classroom or See Saw participation on at least 2 assignments
    • Submitting Assignments (via Remind, See Saw, Google Classroom, text or email)
    • Zoom classroom meetings
    • Phone calls, texting, or email with teacher if you are unable to get online for some reason

Grading for 4th quarter:  Grading is based on Participation. As you know KUA MIddle School has a set schedule. Elementary varies from level to level, but will have a live Zoom lesson Monday thru Thursday.  Work and assignments are posted on SeeSaw or Google Classroom. Friday is a day for students to catch up on assignments or for teachers to connect with parents if needed.  This is the day that teachers also report participation.

Our goal for each child is to ensure educational opportunities that will help prepare each child for the following grade.

  • Middle grades are limited to Por “X” only. P = Participation  If students are meeting the participation requirements they will receive a P.  If students cannot participate they will receive an X. There will be no penalty for students who cannot meet the requirements.
    • X = no Participation, no credit (no penalty).
    • Elementary School grades for ELA and Math are limited to an “M” or Blank
    • M = Meets on the report card means that students are participating
    • Blank= Does not meet (no penalty).
  • All other courses will not be graded, considered supplemental, and left blank on the report to parents.

Primary Communicator for wants and needs: A primary communicator prevents confusion and helps to streamline the help given to families and students in need. Parents need to reach out to the Primary Communicator first.

  • The Classroom Teacher is the Primary Communicator for grades K-5.
  • The Middle School Student’s Advisor is the Primary Communicator for MS.

We have established a VIBE advocate team that is attempting to address all the needs that families have.  A system is in place for them to reach out to you to problem solve. I am sure many of you have already experienced their help.

How will 8th graders make the transition to high school?

  • North + South Medford High Schools will be sending out letters to current Medford 8th graders by the end of this week.  8th graders will receive directions on how to choose electives, etc. Check your mailbox!

What about our End of Year Celebrations?
#KUA Strong means that we will make the very best out of a bad situation.   The bottom line is that we must remain strong and safe. That means finding new and creative ways to honor the end of the year.

  • Kinder Teachers are currently brainstorming ways to celebrate the end of a very very special year.  Stay Tuned!
  • Mrs. Hale will be meeting with 8th grade Teachers and 8th grade Student Council members to create a plan to celebrate the end of the 8th grade year.  One idea would be to have each 8th grade upload a photo of themselves holding a unique message to KUA and their classmates and teachers. Imagine a Virtual Yearbook.  We could also mail to families certificates and programs. The ideas are endless!

I hope this letter was helpful.  Please feel free to message, call or email with questions you may have.

# KUASTRONG!

Mrs. Hale
Principal KUA
