Meet Haley Maddox, the new culinary and nutrition instructor at Kids Unlimited Academy. Ms. Haley — or Chef Haley — is returning to our charter school in a new role after teaching English language development here from 2014 to 2019.

Here’s what she had to say about her background, her personal interests and what she enjoys most about teaching — and about KUA.

What is your educational background and training?

I earned my undergraduate degree in Spanish literature and my master’s degree in teaching. I have taught ELD in a few different schools locally. I also taught third grade in a two-way immersion program at Phoenix Elementary School. I have my nutrition certification and am a co-owner of an online nutrition coaching program.

What do you enjoy most about your job at KUA?

I really love working with kids, and I feel so blessed to get the opportunity to teach kids about cooking and nutrition. Offering culinary arts/nutrition in an elementary setting is such an amazing opportunity for these students, and I feel very fortunate to share my knowledge with them.

What do you think makes KUA different from other charter schools locally and statewide?

One thing that sets KUA apart from other charter schools are all of the various opportunities for the students, in addition to the typical subjects (reading, writing and math). I’m not sure there are other elementary schools in the state that offer the same kinds of opportunities for kids to be creative and experience all the things KUA provides to their students.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time I love spending time with my two adult children, adventuring outdoors, hiking, backpacking, skiing, traveling and, of course, cooking.
