The first student newsletter of Kids Unlimited Academy’s new journalism elective is hot off the presses!

The fall 2026 edition was produced by fifth graders Addie, Alize, Aria, Audrina, Camila, Daleyza, Jackie and Katherine. All are students in Mrs. Heather’s class.

“My favorite part was when we got to watch KUA-TV,” said Addie. “I love this class because it was an all-girls class, and it was just so funny!”

Journalism students interviewed KUA staff and classmates to produce short articles about school events, enrichment activities and such topics as kindness and making friends. Click here to download your copy of the newsletter.

The elective class learned to develop story ideas, generate sources and conduct research, in addition to writing in the inverted pyramid style. Articles were typed using the school’s Chromebooks and submitted through Google classroom, a process students said they liked.

“And you got to take your time to interview teachers,” said Daleyza.

Journalism students learned to identify the who, what, when, where, why and how in news stories and to frame their own questions. They peer-reviewed each other’s articles and made suggestions prior to publication. Longtime Southern Oregon journalist Sarah Lemon led the class.

Lemon was affiliated for more than 20 years with the Mail Tribune newspaper, where she worked as reporter, copy editor, columnist and section editor. She now produces newsletters, blog posts, social media content and marketing materials for Kids Unlimited, also acting as the organization’s on-staff grant writer.
